Jethro E. Jones stamped his name to the left of the lock on the top edge. This was a traditional practice amongst Victorian carpenters.

Blanket chests were traditionally sited on the upstairs landing so any member of the household, perhaps awakening in the night, could have access to them without disturbing others. Candles were stored inside in a small separate compartment, so that they too were easily accessible.
