Historically, in the 19th century, camphorwood chests were bought in the far east and used to transport linen and fabrics back to the UK. Paradoxically the aroma would deter insect life but infuse the contents with a wonderful scent.

Blanket chests were traditionally sited on the upstairs landing so any member of the household, perhaps awakening in the night, could have access to them without disturbing others. Candles were stored inside in a small separate compartment so that they too were easily accessible.
